Swimming Pool Water Problem Solving

Following are some of the common problems that may occur with your pool water and suggestions on how to correct them.

Eye or Skin Irritation - The PH is most likely too low.

  1. Test and adjust your PH to between 7.2 and 7.6.
  2. If the PH is not within the proper range, add the proper chemicals to adjust the PH.
  3. If the PH is within the proper range, shock the pool and run the filter for a longer cycle.

Cloudy Water - Most likely a filtration problem.

  1. Check filtration system to make sure it is functioning properly and the filters are clean.
  2. Check the Alkalinity and PH to make sure it isn't too high. Adjust if necessary.
  3. If 1 and 2 check out okay, shock the pool and run the filter for a longer cycle.

Chlorine Odor - Chloramines are present due to inadequate levels of "free" chlorine.

  1. Test and adjust your PH to between 7.2 and 7.6.
  2. Shock the pool.
  3. Run the filter for a longer cycle.

Green Algae - Caused by inadequate levels of chlorine.

  1. Brush algae off of the pool surfaces.
  2. Test and adjust your PH to between 7.2 and 7.6.
  3. Shock the pool.
  4. Run the filter for a longer cycle.
  5. Treat with a Green Algae Algaecide.

Blue/Green Water

  1. Test and adjust your PH to between 7.2 and 7.6.
  2. Use a clarifier and vacuum any fallout to avoid staining.
  3. To prevent this problem from recurring, treat the pool with a Metal & Calcium Eliminator.

Brown/Mustard Algae - Appears in patches. Brushes away easily, but reappears quickly.

  1. Brush algae off of the pool surfaces.
  2. Test and adjust your PH to between 7.2 and 7.6.
  3. Shock the pool.
  4. Run the filter for a longer cycle.
  5. Treat with a Mustard Algae Algaecide.

Black Algae - Appears as black spots. For unpainted, concrete type pools.

  1. Brush algae off of the pool surfaces.
  2. Test and adjust your PH to between 7.2 and 7.6.
  3. Shock the pool.
  4. Run the filter for a longer cycle.
  5. Treat with a Black Algae Algaecide.
  6. For Painted, Vinyl, or Fiberglass pools, contact a pool service professional.

The best way to avoid these types of problems is with proper preventative maintenance. Accurate testing and timely chemical adjustments on a regular basis will help avoid most problems.
